Bull Bars Buying Guide: Choosing Your New Bar
There are a heap of bull bar options out there and even more styles to choose from. But not all bull bars are created equally, and not every design is going to be right for your set-up.
So which bull bar is right for you? Bull bars for 4x4s need to tick a lot of boxes, from safety to practicality, compliance and vehicle integration.
Check out our buyer’s guide to discover what would work best for you.
Do I need a bull bar?
Whether you are touring rural areas or hitting the tracks, the main advantage of a bull bar is having more frontal protection than your plastic bumper, so you can keep your vehicle mobile.
Bull bars are designed to be able to take hits from ‘roos and other animals and reduce the risk of damage to critical vehicle components like radiators, headlights and intercoolers. Damage to these components can leave you stranded.
A properly designed and engineered bull bar will be tested to ensure that the vehicle's safety features including air-bags all maintain correct operation in an accident.
If you’re driving down highways or doing a big lap, it’s highly recommended that you get an ADR compliant 4x4 bull bar installed to improve your ability to remain mobile while travelling.
If you’re hitting the tracks and getting into recreational 4x4 driving, there are a number of benefits, including:
- Improved ground clearance: Your standard 4wd front bumper sits quite low and won’t take much of a hit from rocks and logs. An off-road bull bar replaces the lower section of your bumper and provides improved clearance and approach angles when off roading.
- Space for bigger tyres: Bull bars can also allow you to fit larger tyres than what your standard bumper will; larger tyres are a great advantage for off-road driving.
- Space for accessories: A bull bar is also a great place for installing recovery points, winches, driving lights, and UHF aerials, which will make your trips safer and easier.
At IRONMAN 4X4 we recommend getting a bull bar to anyone who is doing regular rural travel or enjoys recreational 4x4ing.

Material & Design matters — how your bull bar’s build quality affects your driving experience
Your choice of bull bar and its build material can make a big difference in how your 4WD responds to impacts on the road and how it contributes to your 4x4’s GVM — gross vehicle mass, the total weight of your entire vehicle, including passengers.
Steel bull bars
Steel bull bars are known for their strength and durability. Their solid construction means they don’t have to rely on reinforcing their build with extra thick walls, like other materials do, to achieve the same range of stability.
Most bull bars you’ll see on Australian roads are made of steel, and for good reason. Their resilience to respond to harsh conditions, like corrugations and animal strikes make them the number one choice for people who actively work and drive in remote and regional areas.
Unfortunately, steel isn’t totally impervious to damage, rust can be caused by water and salt, from beach trips and driving in coastal regions. To prevent rust all IRONMAN 4X4 bull bars are e-coated, powder-coated and backed by a 3 year warranty.
Aluminium bull bars
Aluminium bull bars for 4x4s offer a balance of protection, weight reduction, and corrosion resistance, making them a popular choice for 4x4 drivers.
IRONMAN 4X4’s aluminium bull bars offer a lightweight construction, up to 30% lighter than steel, that can help improve fuel efficiency, manage your car’s GVM and reduce strain on your vehicle’s suspension.
At the same time, their natural resistance to rust is useful for driving or working in coastal and wet environments.
While they can be just as strong as steel thanks to a thicker walled build, they can more easily show signs of wear, scratches and dings than steel.
Plastic bull bars
Plastic bull bars are an option for driving on paved roads and in metropolitan areas where pedestrian safety is a concern and are a solution for meeting regulations in European countries.
While they are lightweight and have little impact on your vehicle’s payload, they offer limited protection against bumps, scrapes and dings.
Types of bull bars: which is right for you?
Choosing the right type of IRONMAN 4X4 bull bar comes down to a range of factors. Things to consider, include:
- Whether you’ll be using your car for commercial or recreational use
- How likely are animal strikes on the roads you drive most often
- What accessory mounting options are important to you
- Whether you need additional protection like scrub rails
Hoopless bull bar
If you’re after a bar with clean looks that still offers a level of protection a hoopless bull bar like the IRONMAN 4X4 Raid Bar might be for you.
While it doesn’t offer protection around the headlights, impact resistance at the base of the bar is just as strong as a triple hoop option.
There’s no shortage of features, including capacity for light bar and cube light integration, rated recovery points, and like all IRONMAN 4X4 bull bars the Raid Bar is 12,000 lb winch compatible.
Single hoop bull bar
As the name describes, single hoop bars have one central hoop that curves over and protects the front grille and radiator.
They’re popular for people wanting moderate protection with a clean look and some extra space for accessories, like UHF aerials and more driving lights.
If you’re regularly driving trails with deep rocky ruts, a triple-hoop bull bar with a set of side rails may be the better option.
Triple hoop bull bar
Triple hoop bull bars offer the most front-end protection in the range, with three hoops covering your grille, headlights, and your car’s most important components.
IRONMAN 4X4 triple hoop bull bars come in three versions:
- Commercial Bull Bar: A simple design that offers maximum protection for fleet vehicles and budget conscious tourers.
- Deluxe Bull Bar: A classic bull bar design with round LED fog lights and durable 50mm hoops.
- Apex Bull Bar: A modern take on the Deluxe bar with six cube light-ready pods and our biggest 60.3mm hoops.
Whether you go for an aluminium or steel option, triple hoop bars are the best choice for people working in commercial and industrial environments and tourers who want to be able to take their rigs anywhere.
Considerations for choosing a bull bar
IRONMAN 4X4 bull bars are built to last; our Australian engineering team ensures that each bar is ADR compliant, airbag compatible, and works with all OEM tech and safety features, like sensors, lane departure warnings and front-facing cameras.
Some factors you need to be across to help you choose the ideal model include:
Vehicle model
Bull bars are vehicle specific. Your bull bar needs to seamlessly fit your 4WD’s dimensions and connect to the designated mounting points to ensure it’s reliably and securely attached while driving in the harshest terrain or during an accident.
Bull Bar Weight
Your chosen bull bar shouldn’t exceed the weight limit of your 4x4’s front axle to avoid affecting your vehicle’s handling on the road or fuel efficiency. Additionally, consider the weight of your bull bar to confirm it doesn’t grossly contribute to your 4WD’s GVM.
Airbag compatibility
While your bullbar is designed to help insulate against shocks, you need to choose a quality model from a reputable supplier to ensure it doesn’t interfere with your 4WD’s airbag system in the event of a collision.
Tech and safety feature compatibility
Confirm whether your chosen bull bar doesn’t interfere with any functional features of your car, such as sensors, lane departure warnings and front-facing cameras.
Approach angle
Not all bull bars are created equally, while most will improve clearance over your factory bumper, choosing a bar with a good approach angle will help you over steeper obstacles without the bullbar dragging.
Compliance with road rules
Depending on where you live, many states have rules regulating vehicle frontal protection systems. Many rules state that bull bars must have no sharp edges, not lean too far forward, and brackets and other components must be fitted behind the front face of the bar. All IRONMAN 4X4 bull bar designs are ADR compliant.
Accessories that will upgrade your on- and off-road experience
At IRONMAN 4X4, we haven’t just designed the top heavy-duty 4x4 bullbars in Australia that only offer protection for your 4WDs, our bars are designed to work with the rest of your build.
Whether you need your rig set up for work or play, a big lap or weekend trip, our accessory range works seamlessly with your bull bar.
Some optional accessories you should consider in your fit-out include:
Winches
Winches are one of our most popular 4x4 accessories for off-road recovery. Installing a winch at the same time as a bull bar is a popular choice as most bars will need to be removed to fit a winch at a later date.
Side Rails
Side rails protect the sides of your 4x4 in deep ruts and overgrown tracks. IRONMAN 4X4 side rails are designed to perfectly integrate with our triple hoop bars.
Recovery points
Most 4x4’s don’t come with rated recovery points. Our recovery points are rated to 5t and are designed for use with snatch straps or winches during recovery operations.
Driving lights
Bull bars are the perfect palace to mount a pair of LED driving lights. The IRONMAN 4X4 Scope driving light range offers class leading light output and lumen efficiency.
Snorkels & Diff Breathers
While your bull bar will protect your rig from physical damage snorkels and diff breathers will protect your diffs and engine, from sand, dust and water.
Find out why diff breathers are a must have for water crossings.
Underbody Protection
Many drivers opt for bullbars for extra protection, but the front of your car isn’t the only thing that needs it. Our bash plates are some of our most recommended 4x4 accessories for off-road protection, as they offer exceptional coverage across the bottom of your 4WD.
Wiring Extensions
Some bullbars require additional accessories, such as bull patch looms, cube light indicators and parkers, to maintain the functionality of your 4x4’s features.
